Y4W19 Day 7

AM:
90 min bike ride from the Pentagon into DC up near the Capital then back to the Pentagon.

Today I was a busy man. I did the bike ride, I bought my APA reference book, and with a trip to Bestbuy I picked up an ulta-small laptop so I can do some school work during lunch while at work. This way I don’t use their resourses.

The Ride was nice:

We say some geese, the Washington Monument, flowers, water fountains, we saw it all!

And now for the torture:
I spent 5+ hours today working on my ONLINE orientation for Centenary. I need this no matter what class I take. The work is going to be brutal. The APA cheat sheet mini book I bought was 35 dollars! the computer was 370 with tax. There was a cheaper option but it did not seem as good as the option I chose. We did share a nice dinner with the neighbors and their parents so I was able to take a small break from the madness. I expect whichever class I take I will be spending 1 or more hours a day on the computer working on something for class. I hope the Bible class will be a better class for me.

Y4W19 Day 6

AM:
30 min elliptical machine

30 min bike ride on the WO&D trail

PM:
walked to the Columbia Pike Blues Festival
Walked around a book store
walked around Target
Walked around Bestbuy

Today was filled with and necessity. I was looking to find a cheap small screen laptop for school work so Bestbuy and Target were on my must stop places. I found I need to do more research to narrow down which 10 inch screen will be the winner for me. Once I am done here I need to start my college orientation online.

SO today I had a chance to look around the Centenary website and see my classes and grades from the past. I also re-read the syllabus for the World Literature class and freaked out. I made a gross error in my understanding of the Reflective Journal that I need to keep weekly. I thought it was a personal journal with me writing about what I learned or took away from the weekly reading assignments. It is not. It is actually a 2-3 page paper I need to write each week.

This is from the syllabus:

REFLECTIVE JOURNALS
Each student will keep a weekly reflective journal based upon the topic discussed in each week’s session. Select one quote per week to reflect upon. Journals may be discussed during online discussions. Journal entries should be written in Word and submitted via the Assignment link in Moodle to the instructor by Saturday at midnight for each week. Entries should be two to three pages (double- spaced with one space between paragraphs using either Times New Roman or Arial 12 point fonts only).

Reflective journals will be assessed using the Reflective Journal Rubric.

The written reflective journal should include:

Identification of the author of the quote
Identification of the literary work of the quote
Analysis and explanation of the significance/meaning of each quote
Evaluation of how each quote is relevant to present day

Week 1:
“This thou perceiv’st, which makes thy love more strong, to love that well which thou must leave ere long.”
“Yet by heaven, I think my love as rare, as any she belied by false compare.”

Week 2:
“But at my back I always hear, Time’s winged chariot hurrying near.”
“No man hath affliction enough that is not matured and ripened by and made fit for God by that affliction.”

Week 3:
“Those who are more thrifty (as I must confess the times require) may flea the carcass; the skin of which, artificially dressed, will make admirable gloves for ladies, and summer boots for fine
gentlemen.”
“Stella be not troubled, though thy size – and years – have doubled.”

Week 4:
“If we revert to history, we shall find that the women who have distinguished themselves have neither been the most beautiful nor the most gentle of their sex.”
It does not require great art, or magnificently trained eloquence, to prove that Christians should tolerate each other. I, however, am going further: I say that we should regard all men as our brothers. What? The Turk my brother? The Chinaman my brother? The Jew? The Siam? Yes, without doubt; are we not all children of the same father and creatures of the same God?

Week 5:
“The poetry of earth is never dead.”
“So your chimneys I sweep and in soot I sleep.”
“We are put on earth a little space that we may learn to bear the beams of love.”

Week 6:
“Where ignorant armies clash by night.”
“Nature red in tooth and claw . . . .”

Week 7:
“… the joy that kills.”
“When you have prayed for victory you have prayed for many unmentioned results which follow victory–*must* follow it, cannot help but follow it. Upon the listening spirit of God fell also the unspoken part of the prayer. He commandeth me to put it into words. Listen!”
Week 8:
“Or does it explode?”
“Freedom lurked around us and I understood, at last, that he could help us to be free if we would listen,
that he would never be free until we did.”

Combine this with the actual readings I will need to do and I am screwed. I am not going to make it through this class. I should not set myself up for failure. This is going to cost over 1,500 to take the class then when I fail it another 1,500 to take a different one. I am going to have to take a different class or take one locally and transfer in the credits. My GPA is 3.17 which is not bad. Failing a class or just getting by with a D or C will not keep me above a 3.0 Grade Point Average.

Y4W19 Day 4

AM:
55 min elliptical machine

PM:
24 min bike

Today was crazy! I was working my tail off getting my school stuff in order. I had a pleasant surprise in finding out I had earned 11 credits in Electronics at a correspondence school I was studying at. I applied to have those credits transferred to the Park University to see if I can get some partial credits for them. I also took a computer class at Strayer University and I am having them send my transcripts to Park as well. If all goes well I might be able to eliminate one or two of the classes I need for my 4 year degree. Once I pass my two classes at Centenary I will have them transferred as well and I might have my 4 year degree in less than a year! That would be amazing!!!!!!!

Y4W19 Day 3

AM:
50 min elliptical machine

Today I found out the cause and after action of the network outage at work that occurred on Friday. Three people were fired. One person escorted a non-credentialed new employee through a computer room without having then sign in as required(FIRED!) and stay with them the entire time there were in the space. The non-credentialed person was there for official business and interacted with person within that space that is credentialed. Once the task was completed the non-credentialed person left the worker’s area and went into the computer room where she felt trapped. In order to exit the magnet locked door you need to hit the exit button on the wall. There were 3 things on the wall and she she did not choose wisely. She did not pull the fire alarm (good for her!) but she did lift the large clear plastic cover with the writing on it explaining it is the emergency shut-off for electrical and pressed it. She tried the door and it did not open so she then presses the button marked exit and the door unlocked and she walked out. When she hit the electrical shut off it kills the power in the entire data center (2 large rooms, 2 engineering labs, the power for the 4th and 5th floor telco closets etc.) So she too was fired. The third person fired????? the person she interacted with during her official task. He should have escorted her out since she was not credentialed to be in there alone in the first place. WOW! They are still having some issues with some minor systems. What a day. Two of the folks had been there for a few years and the lady was a new hire and did not know any better. SUX to be them.

Today was a part time adventure! We had some work to do but the request was not with all the needed information so back it went. I registered with Centenary College today. I will take my 2 classes there, hopefully pass them and earn my 2 year degree. I will then transfer my credits to Park, hope I get some credit for the credits and then take what ever classes I need to to get my 4 year degree. WooHoo! I have a plan and have started on my path. Well I guess I started on the path over 20 years ago, stopped following the path, then started following the path again, then stopped for 18+ years and now her I am.

Y4W19 Day 1

AM:
50 min elliptical machine

PM:
I went to Strayer University to check my past college records. I lost my afternoon workout because of it.

So I did more scheming and planning. I remembered I went to Strayer university for a class (or 2) but did not have luck with them pulling my records. I will need to make a formal request and pay a fee. I have decided my course of action (as of right this second, before I change my mind for the 500th time) and I will take the 2 online classes for a Centenary Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts. It is the quickest path to a degree for me (as long as I pass the literature class). Once I do that I will transfer in my new earned credits to Park University and see if I can whittle down some of the total credits I need to earn there for my 4 year degree. At worst I will need to take 6 classes, best case I will only need 4. So I should have a degree by Jan/Feb of next year. Then I will work on the 4 year degree for another 12 to 24 months. Once I take the first two classes individually I should be able to take 2 classes at the same time since I will be back in School mode and might be able to do it in as little as 6-9 months, but I don’t want to get ahead of myself.

Y4W18 Day 7

AM:
2 hour hike at Scotts run.

Today I felt better even though I was still feeling sick. We decided to do a hike and that would skip my morning gym so we could be out there early. Originally we were going to travel further away and hike but I became concerned if I did not feel good a long ride home would suck. So instead I called an audible and we switched to Scotts Run. We did well there. The hills did kick my ass more than normal but hey I am still sick. We saw toads, water and plenty of trees that were green! Life is good.

Once we got home we did a BBQ and enjoyed some lunch. While hanging out we heard some Cooing in the trees above us. Turned out there were 3 doves fooling around. The one in the middle was a real player, he was beak kissing both the ladies.

AM:
45 min elliptical machine

Bonus:
1 hour mowing the community garden area in the heat! It sucked!

So today I am still feeling sick. My throat is sore and the congestion has been keeping me from sleeping for more than a couple hours at a time. I almost did not go to the gym but in the end I forced myself there. I had to do the work at the community garden since we are co-gardeners and it was our turn. Miriam was off on her run today so I was solo. I sweated and was slightly dizzy but got it done. I went home showered and went back to bed. Going back to bed was a common theme today. I went back to bed again for an afternoon nap as well. I still feel rocked and will be going to sleep for the night pretty soon. It is amazing how off you can feel when you are sick. I am snap-ish tired, and can’t seem to focus well at all today. I am feeling marginally better so hopefully tomorrow will be a normal day. I can only hope. I did not make any progress on deciding which college to go to. There is the quick way and to struggle through a class or there is the longer way and I will have my 4 year degree which is my ultimate goal. Oh well tomorrow I can think about it.

Y4W18 Day 5

AM:

PM:
30 min elliptical machine

Work today, was interesting. There was an epic network failure that occurred. Nothing we did and nothing we could fix so we were like Switzerland, we were neutral. The new network engineering team that was just brought it was going crazy trying to fix it. The whole 5th floor lost network connectivity. Things in the Data center lost connectivity. I checked the 5th floor telco closet and I saw there was no power to any of the equipment. I knew there was nothing for us to do. The Building maintenance team was going to be involved for the electrical problem. It took over an hour for the Network telephones to come online. Email, internet, messaging etc took longer. When we left for the day there were still systems not back online. I don’t know what caused the power to go out. Could be operator error tripping the wrong breaker, power surge tripping the breaker, someone might have hit the emergency cutoff switch for some reason(security footage will show that), could have been cleaners overloading a circuit with a vacuum cleaner (they should better unless they we new) The new company was just tested with it’s first crisis in 3-4 months of being on site. They did not hire on many of the previous employees that had good knowledge of the place. Monday is going to be interesting, for work and for my schooling choices!
