Y2W4 Day 1

I needed to get up early today to be ready to go in to my potential place of employment and turn in some paperwork.  I was up before the alarm at 5am!

AM:
20 min jog
20 min elliptical stepper

PM:
Weight lifting
3 sets squats (it did not feel good so I stopped)
6 sets of bench press
9 sets of leg press
4 sets of EZ-Bar curls

Today was a full day. I was up early, I was on the go from morning until dinner time, and I feel good. Speaking of dinner, I made a kick ass beef and veggie stir-fry. This is going to be really good for my digestive system!

Y2W3 Day 7

A fun Day!

Today I started my morning with going to the gym and working out on the elliptical stepper machine for 50 minutes.  I alternated between stepping and elliptical motion every 5 minutes and increased the level every 5 minutes.  It was a good workout.

My afternoon workout was a hike with my wife at Donaldson Run.  We did a side trail up to Overlook Park and in the end we hiked a little over 5 miles and about 2 hours in time.   Not bad.

Tomorrow is the day I turn in my paperwork for employment and hope to get a start date.  Life is coming back to normalcy.

Y2W3 Day 6

AM:
100 minutes Walked to (and back) where my potential new place of employment will be.

PM:
20 min elliptical machine
20 min bike

Today was a very windy and cold day. Me and the wife we both tired and slow today. We took it easy exercising and enjoying the couch today. Nothing special happened food-wise today. Dinner was BBQ chicken breast with fried cabbage and Quinoa. It was a quick easy meal.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a better day. I hope we can make more of it than we did today.

Y2W3 Day 5

AM:
1 mile jog
35 min elliptical machine
15 min bike

PM:
jumping rope
6 sets of 50

I was out of the zone today. I got the call for the job and had to do paperwork for 3+ hours. I skipped the PM gym time (It was raining too!) But I decided to jump some rope since finding the jump ropes. I was surprised I was able to do 6 sets of 50 reps. That made me feel good.

I was bad with eating today. Not all day, just dinner. A few glasses of wine and 3/4 of a home made pizza. Turkey sausage, mushroom and red pepper pizza on wheat crust. YUM!

Y2W3 Day 4

A great day to be outside!

Unbelievable, the weather was warm and  sunny and everyone was out in the neighborhood.  I got up and ht the gym and jogged a mile then got on the elliptical stepper for 50 minutes.  I alternated  between 5 minutes of stepping motion and 5 minutes of elliptical motion increasing the resistance level by 1 each 5 minutes.  It kicked my butt!

I was suffering from a headache a lot of the day so I did not venture out.  I even tried to take a nap hoping that would help and it did not.  I did make it to the gym in the afternoon to weight lift even though I did not fele good.  I started with 3 sets of dumbbell aerobics (push-ups, overhead press, squats, dead lifts, alternate arm curls, and sit-ups, one right after the other) then normal lifting.   I used the cable weights to do cable bench press and cable flies.  I then did 10 sets of leg presses working up to 720 lbs.  The headache came and went as I worked out and I still had it when I got home.

Dinner was a fun one!  We made ground turkey chile with tortilla chips and shredded cheese and went crazy and had some fizzy sangria.

It is now 10:38 pm and I can say I do not feel my headache now.  I am not sure when it passed but noting seemed to work for me today, I even took excedrine with no effect.

Y2W3 Day 3

When you stop getting the results it is time to try something new.

AM:
21.5 min jog
40 min elliptical machine

PM:
3 hour bike ride!

Today was a great day. It was fairly warm, mid 50’s. I needed to have my truck inspected and there is a bike trail a block away from the shop…
I decided to embrace the warm weather and go for a ride. I have done 30 miles before on the Mount Vernon Trail and know I can do it. I usually work up to distances over 15 to 18 miles since my body is not used to it, but I said “let me throw caution to the wind and ride the ride I have done before!” Billy would be proud!
I set out and did well on my way to Mount Vernon. Once there I had a banana and special k bar for lunch. I did not rest for long. There were some white puffy clouds coming in and they were blocking the sun that was making the 50 degree weather feel warm. As I got up from the picnic table I realized my legs were feeling wobbly. I guess 15 miles would have been a good starting distance for today’s ride. At this point I have no choice but to ride back. My wife is at work and my truck is in the shop. Off I go. The good thing is the trail now has more down hills that the trip here. It was brutal but doable. I tried to stand up for more power on some of the gradual uphill sections but could not do it. My legs were jello. I do not ever remember that happening before. after 3 hours and 30 miles I made it back to the shop and picked up my truck. I was happy I did not have to pedal up the big hill to get to my house! It is hours later and I finally had to take some Advil since my muscles and joints are sore. Good for me.

Food tonight was outstanding!  I baked some boneless and skinless chicken thighs.  I took some cashews and chopped them up fine and sprinkled them over the chicken that was tightly packed in my oven pan.   I sprinkled some salt, pepper and sugar  on top and baked for about 45 minutes.  The chicken was then chopped up and topped an Asian inspired salad of lettuce, red pepper and mandarin oranges.

Y2W3 Day 2

A good day with my wife!

My Honey Bunny needed to take care of some things today so she took a vacation day.   It was cool,  we got to hang out on a week day!  We even went for a hike in Rock Creek Park!

AM:
9 min mile
50 min elliptical machine

lunch:
1 hour hike

PM:
30 min of dumbbell aerobics
28 min weight lifting

We did good with eating all day. Dinner was some thin sliced steak, asparagus and mushrooms. I cooked each item separately and seasoned them uniquely. I ended up under seasoning the whole meal but it still tasted great.

I hope tomorrow will even be a better day!

Y2W3 Day 1

Today was a holiday!  It was great I was off from work… well well you are unemployed like I am every day is a holiday!

I was still feeling the soreness in my knees and ankles so I took it easier this morning for my workout.  I jogged 1 mile, then 25 minutes each on the stair stepper and the elliptical machine.   I did not have a great sweat going but my body did not suffer with higher impact jogging for long.

My pm workout was low impact too.  I pushed on the elliptical  machine for 45 minutes.   Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing some of the Crossfit games on TV.  It was cool to see.  Those folks are athletes!   I need to do more research and see how I can incorporate some of their workouts into my workouts.  Some of it is really intense and high impact, but you can’t argue with the results.  The have many men and women knocking out pull-ups, dips and other normal type exercises after training for a while.  I would like to get there.

I did ok with food today.  My featured meal of the day was eggplant lasagna.  I sliced the eggplant thin after I skinned it.  I used the eggplant as a layer in place of a layer of pasta.  That helps it be lower carb and still incredible.  I do not use meat in my lasagna.  I mix some shredded mozzarella, part skin ricotta, and low fat cottage cheese together with an egg as my cheese filling.  I pick two related pasta sauces to give the meal some flavor dimension.  I used a hearty garden pasta sauce in one layer and a tomato basil in the others.  If I really wanted to cut down on the carbs I would have sliced the eggplant thicker and only used 1 layer of pasta noodles.   The only downside to making this meal is that I make a big pan of it and I find it difficult to only eat a

Nothing special today.  I was still sore in my knees and ankles from the hiking yesterday.  I took it easy with the leg presses and leg extensions.

Dinner was a favorite tonight,  Salmon with cooked spinach and greens.  It rocked!

Y2W2 Day 6

A long torturous hike!

My wonderful wife wanted to take a long hike today so I picked out Prince Willian Forresy Park as the location.  It sits outside Quanico Marine Corps Base and is only 30 miles away from our house.  Too bad it took us 1.5 hours to get there.  Damn traffic and accidents!  Anyway we stopped at he visitors cented and spoke to the staff there.  A very helpful volunteer plotted out 2 different routes we could take that would have us hiking more than 10 miles either way.  WOW!  We did not get started until 12:30 so we knew we had to hussle to beat the setting sun.  We were going up and down hills, walking along streams,  we even saw a small water feature along the way,  shame on them calling it a water fall!  water falls have water falling vertically, not babbling over rocks like that!  We hiked so long my phone battery ran out of charge so we don’t know the actual distance completed but based on the time we hiked we can take the average speed we traveled and see we did at least 12 miles in about 4.5 hours.  This hike brought about a lot of pain and discomfort in my ankles and knees.  I think the 5+ mile jog I did yesterday was a contributing factor.  I was so glad to finally make it back to the truck and take some Advil.  The last time we checked the phone trascking program we had hiked 9 miles and had been hiking 3 hours and 17 minutes.  We made it back to the truck in another 1 and 15 minutes.  Funny thing was I was really feeling the pain and needed to “job” really slowly just to have my muscles and joints working differently. It work and allowed us to cover more ground.  It was starting to get scary since the daylight was fading as we were working our way back to the truck.  I started thinking how crappy it would be if we did not navigate the trails properly and end up in the dark.  I did not have a flashlight with us.  Also I had worn my wind breaker the whole hike and did not have anything else to put on to keep me warm if the temperature dropped.  My wife did have the jacket she took off earlier if she needed to add some warmth.  Everything was fine and we made it back no problem.  We had plenty of water with us as well as some protein bars and apples for food.  Once we settled in at the truck we enjoyed the tune salad we had waiting for us in the cooler.  I knew we would be pushing the phone battery to its limit with the tracking program running  so we only took pictures once.  For some reason we both saw this one area on the trail and new we each needed a picture here.

Today we learned that my light pack is the right size for both of us.  It holds just enough to be useful for long hikes like today.  We also learned my wife’s new pack is smaller and not big enough for hikes like today.  That is too bad.  It is an OK pack but it looks like we will be getting another one to match the one I have.  When you find something that works you got to stick with it!
