Week 2 Day 1

Time to weigh-in for the new week.  Did my weekend activities do anything possitive for me?   YES!

That is down from 354!   not bad for 7 days of effort.   Here are my body pictures to keep the documenting going.   I expect around the 3rd or 4th week there sound be some visual effect of my body changing.

I  felt good exercising again this morning.  Nothing like seeing some positive results to give you a buzz!  I did 2 different eliptical machines and the stair master each for 20 minutes.   60 minutes of cardio is a great way for me to start the day.

My meals were all packed and I actually felt like I ate alot.   I started with 1/2 a baked potatato, 2 turkey sausage patties, 1 hard boiled egg and an orage for 325 calories.    Morning snack was lettuce salad with chicken breast, bulgar wheat, a banana and a special K fruit crisp bar.   554 calories.   That might be a little high for a snack but I felt hungry and added the banana 10 minutes after the rest and the bar another 10-15 minutes later.      Lunch was a bowl of shicken breast, 1 small sweet potato, steamed broccoli, a yoplait light yogurt and pringles pizza stix (100 calories)  for a total of 571 calories.   my afternoon snack was an apple  and 1.5 hours latter I was walking to the gym to lift.   Today me and my buddy tried something different.  Rather than push heavier weights we did very light to light weights and did high repetitions for each set.  We did bench presses, dip press machine, butterfly machine, triceps pull downs, and cable curls.   We also did 4 sets of the weighted crunch machine.    I finished with a 15 minute walk at incline on the treadmill.   I hope to be light jogging in 2-3 more weeks.

I had a nature valley peanut butter granola bar on my drive home and for dinner I had between 8-10 ounces of steak over 5 two bowls of lettuce salad.  There was some Feta cheese, walnuts, strawberries, red pepper, and portobello mushrooms added as well.  For dressing I used straight Balsomic vinegar.  I feel good and it did not feel like a heavy meal since there was no added starch or carbs.

I am ready for tomorrow!

Week 1 Day 7

Today ends my first week.  I feel better than good.    My wife made some protein pancakes for us and we each also had some Morningstar fake sausages to get us fed.    It was a cold morning but we decided to go on a hike.   We went to Donaldson Run in Arlington.  For the most part it was great.  The trails were mostly still frozen and the water crossings were mostly dry too.

I hiked here with my wife and brother-in-law about 5 months ago and the hills really kicked my butt!

I did the hills better and my wife and I were able to pace with each other very well.   That is her up there saying hurry up and take the picture!

We hiked for 1 hour and 15 minutes.   Not bad.  We then went grocery shopping for another 35-45 minutes.   We shared an apple on the way to the store and as soon as we got home we made some lunch.  We did a tuna salad with shredded carrots and celery, and instead of mayo we used Dannon Greek yogurt.  It wasn’t bad just a little bland.  I was fiending for food so I did also have a serving of baby carrots, 1.5 servings of leftover Cous Cous,  and half a large red pepper.

Tomorrow is the start of week 2  and will include the new weigh-in and pictures.  I can’t wait to see the scale so I can tell what my weekend has done to my body.

Week 1 Day 6

It felt so good to sleep in until 6:30 am!   I am usually up for work at 3:30 am,  out of the house at 4:10 am, parked at work on the campus and walking to the gym on post at 4:45 am.   My job has me in early and out early so I can hit the gym after work and still beat some rush hour traffic.

This morning I had 2 whole eggs with one egg white as an omelet with part skim ricotta cheese and 5 minis of apple and chicken sausage .   Later for a snack I had a baked sweet potato.   Lunch was a Healthy choice spicy Caribbean meal.   For dinner I had a banana to start things off while I cooked Cous Cous with some raisins, asparagus, steamed baby carrots and Quorn chick’n nuggets.

The nuggets are pretty cool.  They are meatless and soy free.    They are made with some type of mushroom/fungus protein.   These are hands down the best fake chicken nuggets I have ever had.  My wife and I don’t get a lot of heavily processed chicken foods, we prefer fresh breasts and thighs.    We don’t always have the time to make a great dinner and that is where food like this comes in handy.    They look like fast food nuggets, they take 3 minutes to heat in the microwave and   I mix a small amount of honey and mustard together  to lightly dip them and wow they taste great.  The consistency is right also.  They feel like chicken as you chew them.

Today was a really long day.  Exercise took the form of  necessity.  My car needed servicing so we dropped it off and walked home the 1.5 miles.   There is a big hill (6 side streets off of it) to climb on the way home.  Wow it was intense.  Later when the vehicle was ready I walked back down to get it.     that is 1 hour of walking to offset the 9+ hours of sitting in front of the computer trying to get all this blog stuff together.    I am done!  good night.

Week 1 Day 5

Today is a weigh-in day!

So far for the week I am looking at about 6.5 pounds down with the weekend to go.

My morning workout was with 3 machines today. The first elliptical machine was for 10 minutes. It is a machine I do not like. the range of motion for my legs is wrong so 10 minutes was enough. I switched to the stair master for 20 minutes and felt good there. I finished up on the lower body cross-trainer elliptical (lbxtr) machine. 60 minutes of cardio and I felt good.

Next came breakfast after showering up for my work day.

Breakfast was nonfat pineapple cottage cheese, a serving of part skim ricotta and an apple. Light and easy, and I felt good after it.
Morning snack was a chicken breast, half a sweet potato and a dole fruit cut. Again I felt good.
Lunch was a bowl of lettuce with chicken breast, onion, red pepper, portobello mushrooms and sticky fingers barbeque sauce. This was left over from the night before and it was too saucy and did not sit well in my belly. Oh well I was better after about an hour.
Afternoon snack was an apple, Yoplait light yogurt, Special K strawberry bar and some Pringles Pizza Stix. The Pizza stix may not have great nutritionally but were all I needed instead of going to the vending machine for junk.

I am not doing an afternoon workout on this Friday. I had some errands to run and my gym partner was off work today.

I hate to say it but I am looking forward to Monday morning so I can see how my weekend activities will reflect on the scale.

Week 1 Day 4

Another day gone by. Another good day! I am still not getting enough sleep but am chugging along. I don’t know how I could fit another hour in the day.

This morning I did 2 different elliptical machines for 30 minutes each. I will try to do some time on each different one so I can benefit from the unique range of motion each has. Some do changes in elevation height some don’t. There are 4 different ones that do upper and lower body and one that does lower body only.

Meals today were easy again since I packed. I did notice as I was tracking my calories and the ratio of carbohydrates , protein, and fat and realized that my protein was low. This was because I did not do hard boiled eggs for breakfast. I plan to have then 2-3 times a week for breakfast. To help shift things into a better balance I had a can of tuna with low fat mayo as a morning snack and as an afternoon snack. The second can was tough to eat. I would have put 2 or 3 times the amount of mayo in it, but that does not benefit my body so that’s a no go. I went shopping today so I can have some chicken for extra protein if I need it.

My body is feeling good. I have lifted heavier and harder this week and have not had the soreness that I had some months ago when I picked a day to push it.

The afternoon workout was a good one. I did 15 min on the stair master to get my heart pumping and followed it up with leg presses and leg extensions. Today I set 2 new max workout weights for leg exercises. 10 reps of leg extensions at 190 lbs and 10 leg presses at 540 lbs. Neither may be much to some folks but a few weeks ago I was experiencing knee discomfort/pain with leg pressing 270lbs and 360 lbs caused me not to complete 10 reps. This gives me hope once I drop some more weight jogging could be in my future!

Tomorrow I will be weighing in again to see what 5 days has done for me and to gauge what the weekend will do to me since Mondays will be the new week weigh-ins.

Week 1 Day 3

Just for fun I decided to weigh myself and see what 2 full days of eating better might do.

Not Bad. Had I gone to the bathroom first I am sure that would be a full 3 pounds down. I am sure it is not just water weight since I have been doing Cardio for over a year with no results. Adding weight training and diet control is the winning way.

Today’s cardio workout was 30 min of walking on a treadmill at up to a 8% incline up to 3.4 mph. Then 20 min of a lower body only elliptical machine. Not to bad.  I felt good and had sweated some for sure.

Meals where easy again.
Breakfast was 3 egg whites, 1 yoke, 2 morningstar fake sausage patties and an orange for 434 calories.

Snack was a small amount of steak with cooked broccoli and some raw carrots.

Lunch was Shrimp, tortellini with EVOO, and mixed veggies

Afternoon snack was another small amount of steak, cooked brocolli, and raw carrots.

The afternoon workout was 45 minutes of weight lifting and 15 min of Cardio. The main exercise today was using the smith machine with an adjustable bench that goes full upright for overhead presses to fully flat for bench presses. We do a weight for reps at each of the 8 positions starting full upright. Then we lower the weight and do it again. That is 16 sets of chest press exercise. We then did 3 sets of lateral raises, 4 sets of lat pull downs and 3 sets of crunches. We finished the day with 15 min of treadmill. It is rough only walking. When I was lighter back in 2002 I ran the Army ten mile race and averaged 10:15 miles for the ten miles. A couple years later I did the Baltimore half marathon (with an infected ingrown toenail!). The toe issue required surgery and caused me to stop running for about 8 weeks. I never got back into the groove after that.  I was struggling to jog 2 miles then I stopped again for a while after some pain and swelling in my Achilles heel. I never got back to it and now I can’t jog for 3 min straight. Damn that bothers me.

OK back on track here, I had another great day, made progress and look forward to tomorrow!

Week 1 Day 2

I feel Great! I had a really good workout this morning. I did 30 min on an elliptical cross trainer (heart rate between 120-137 level 13) and 15 min on a Stair Master. I varied the level one minute at a time from level 8 up to level 20 (Max of machine).

I am finding my happy place with healthy eating at work.

For breakfast I had 1 package of instant oatmeal, 3 egg whites and one yoke, a banana, and a Yoplait light yogurt for a total of 441 calories, 7 grams of fat, 73 grams of carbohydrates, and 23.6 grams of protein. I felt satisfied. I did not miss my Mountain Dew soda at all.

My morning snack was under 170 calories with raw carrots and a can of tuna with 1 table spoon of light mayo.

Lunch was a fresh made salad with some strawberries and blue berries topped with 8 oz of steak and drizzled with balsamic vinegar and a splash of orange juice. I had an apple as well. Grand total of lunch calories: 622.

I did 30 minutes on an exercise bike after work to keep me active since I skipped lifting at the gym with my buddy off work today.

I might get on the scale tomorrow to see if two days of eating better has had any impact on the numbers. I would think not eating until full and cutting out soda and potato chips might account for up to a 2 pound difference already. My plan is to do official weigh ins on Fridays and Mondays so I can see what my weekends are doing to my progress. It is winter here and cold weather does make the couch that much more cozy with my wife.

Week 1 Day 1

I want to keep track of my weight loss but I also want to keep visual records of how my body is changing.  What follows ain’t pretty, but I need to show my starting point to be able to show my progress.

WARNING!  pictures of a fat guy are below!

Now that has be documented, time to get this thing moving along.

I plan to post information about my workouts and my diet.  As I get better at this I will find my groove for putting additional things into  this blog like some workout clips, pictures (and maybe video) of food prep, clips from some activities to burn calories and who knows what else.   Here is what I have for day one:
I started my day with 45 minutes of cardio on an elliptical cross trainer.  My heart rate was between 120 and 135 beats per minute.  I burned 885 cal according the the machine.  I worked out at the manual setting and was on level 13 of 25.

I ate well at work all day. No vending machine, no soda. Water and the meals I packed from home. I am tracking my food intake at LiveStrong.com. They have great resources available there with My Daily Plate.  Once I get better settled in I will see about linking or importing the data.

After Work I went back to the gym for my PM workout. I started with 15 more minutes on the elliptical machine then moved on to weights for 30 minutes.  I am tracking what I do with an excel spreadsheet and will explore bringing some or all of that along in the future too.   I am lifting with a friend from work and picking 3-5 different weight lifting exercises to do.  We are trying  not to do the same ones two days in a row.  We will also occasionally skip weights and do a cardio workout instead.

That’s it for today, time for some rest.
